General Dan Caine, the U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed the significance of cyber tactics, stating that "coordinated space and cyber operations effectively disrupted communications and sensor networks" within Iran, rendering the adversary incapable of mounting an effective response. The overarching strategy, as articulated by Caine during a press conference, was to "disrupt, disorient, and confuse the enemy." In a striking example of this coordinated approach, the Israeli Defense Forces targeted the offices of two state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) channels. Following the bombings, they hijacked the broadcasts to air messages from U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling on Iranians to rise against their government, as reported by the Jerusalem Post. Furthermore, Israeli operatives reportedly utilized hacked traffic cameras in Tehran to gather intelligence crucial to the operation that led to Khamenei's assassination. The Financial Times noted that Israel had maintained access to this camera network for years and had extensively infiltrated mobile phone networks. In addition to these operations, hackers targeted an Iranian prayer app, BadeSaba Calendar, sending messages that urged users to abandon oppressive forces in favor of liberation. One such message proclaimed, "For a free Iran," clearly indicating a psychological operation aimed at swaying pro-regime sentiments among the populace. Despite these aggressive cyber maneuvers, Iranian hackers have reportedly struggled to mount an effective counter-response thus far. While the impact of cyber operations on the conflict remains a topic of debate, it is crucial to consider the possibility that authorities may exaggerate these effects to instill fear in their adversaries. Similar patterns were observed earlier this year in Venezuela, where claims of U.S. cyberattacks on power infrastructure were likely overstated compared to the physical damage caused by military action.
