St. Paul, MN was hacked so badly that the National Guard has been deployed

A recent wave of cyberattacks has swept across U.S. cities, with many incidents involving ransomware. These attacks not only incur hefty costs but also cause significant disruptions to municipal operations. For example, Abilene, Texas, experienced a severe breach earlier this year when 477 GB of sensitive data was stolen. Instead of succumbing to the demands of cybercriminals, the city opted not to pay the ransom. Instead, it embarked on a massive overhaul of its technology infrastructure, replacing every server, computer, and phone, and even reverting to manual processes during the transition. Thankfully, Abilene had insurance to cover the aftermath. However, the situation in St. Paul, Minnesota, has escalated to a critical level. On July 25, the city was hit with a cyberattack that has proven to be particularly challenging to address. The severity of the breach prompted officials to declare a state of emergency, leading Governor Tim Walz to deploy the National Guard to provide support. In a statement, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter described the incident as a "deliberate, coordinated digital attack" orchestrated by a highly skilled external entity, specifically targeting the city’s information systems. The implications of such an attack are profound, raising concerns about the vulnerability of urban infrastructures in the face of evolving cyber threats.
