Cursor, the innovative AI coding assistant, has secured an impressive $2.3 billion in its latest funding round, pushing its total valuation to a staggering $29.3 billion. This significant financial boost was reported by the Wall Street Journal and marks a remarkable leap from its previous valuation of $9.9 billion, attained during its $900 million Series C round just five months ago. The recent funding round was co-led by Accel, an existing investor, and Coatue, a newcomer to Cursor's investment portfolio. Notable strategic investors, including Nvidia, which is an enterprise customer, and Google, a supplier of AI models, also joined this round. Thrive Capital, led by Joshua Kushner, has been a consistent supporter of the company, participating in this round following its involvement in the previous two. Michael Truell, Cursor’s co-founder and CEO, revealed that the funds will primarily be directed toward the development of Composer, an AI model launched by Cursor in October. Currently, Cursor relies on external AI models from tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic to enhance its coding platform. However, the company aims for Composer to gradually take on some of that workload. As Cursor continues to experience robust growth, the competitive landscape for AI coding tools is heating up, particularly with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic ramping up their offerings. The upcoming year promises to be pivotal for Cursor as it navigates this dynamic market.
