Sources: Cursor in talks to raise $2B+ at $50B valuation as enterprise growth surges

Cursor, an innovative AI coding startup, is poised to secure more than $2 billion in fresh funding, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions. This significant investment could elevate the company's valuation to an impressive $50 billion prior to the influx of new capital. Leading the financing round are established investors Thrive and Andreessen Horowitz, while Battery Ventures is expected to join as a new contributor. Additionally, technology giant Nvidia is anticipated to participate in this lucrative funding round. Despite the round being oversubscribed, the final terms of the deal are still being negotiated and could see adjustments before completion. Should this funding go through, it would almost double Cursor’s previous valuation of $29.3 billion, which was set just six months ago. Cursor continues to show robust revenue growth in a competitive landscape that includes formidable rivals like Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI’s updated Codex. The startup is projecting an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $6 billion by the end of 2026, indicating an ambitious plan to triple its revenue in the next ten months. Recently, Cursor reported reaching $2 billion in annualized revenue based on its latest monthly sales figures. Historically, Cursor faced challenges with negative gross margins, meaning the costs of running their product exceeded the revenue generated. However, the launch of a proprietary Composer model and a strategy to utilize more affordable models, such as China's Kimi, have enabled the company to achieve modest gross margin profitability. While Cursor has successfully attained positive gross margins on sales to large enterprises, it still incurs losses on individual developer accounts. To mitigate risks associated with relying on external providers, Cursor is strategically reducing its dependency on suppliers like Anthropic, which has emerged as a key competitor. As discussions continue, Cursor, along with Battery Ventures, has opted not to comment, while Thrive, a16z, and Nvidia have not responded to inquiries. Founded in 2022 by a group of MIT students, including Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger, Cursor was initially known as Anysphere.
