Crypto bounces on renewed optimism House could pass key stablecoin legislation this week

The cryptocurrency landscape witnessed a notable upswing on Wednesday, driven by renewed investor optimism despite recent legislative hurdles. Bitcoin climbed approximately 2%, reaching $119,114.79, while ether experienced a 3% increase, hitting $3,156, as per Coin Metrics data. Shares of Circle, a prominent stablecoin issuer, saw a premarket gain exceeding 1%, alongside a modest 0.5% rise for crypto service provider Coinbase, following declines in the previous trading session. The rally extended to ether-related stocks, with BitMine soaring by 24%, SharpLink increasing by 14%, and Bit Digital marking a 5% gain. The cryptocurrency market faced a brief setback earlier this week when the House of Representatives failed to advance two crucial pieces of legislation: the GENIUS Act, which has already passed the Senate, and the more comprehensive CLARITY Act, which is still awaiting a vote. Industry analysts, including Oppenheimer's Owen Lau, suggest that the initial negative market reaction was exaggerated. Lau emphasized that the passage of these bills is more a matter of 'when' rather than 'if,' indicating that potential legislative progress could alleviate months of uncertainty. In a recent social media post, former President Donald Trump highlighted a shift among certain House Republicans who, after discussions with the White House, are now inclined to support the progression of the bills. The GENIUS Act, in its current form, proposes restrictions on stablecoin issuers regarding interest payments to users, which could solidify Ethereum's role in the ecosystem as a preferred platform for stablecoin activity and applications. Despite the positive price movements, some analysts caution that the recent surge in ether may not be fully grounded in fundamental metrics. According to Markus Thielen from 10x Research, active addresses have remained stagnant, network revenue has not changed significantly, and transaction fees have only marginally increased. Over the last three months, ether's price has doubled, reflective of speculative interest amid a broader boom in the stablecoin market. Bitcoin, having reached an all-time high exceeding $120,000 earlier this week, faced volatility due to substantial long liquidations amounting to over $360 million on Monday. Nevertheless, it quickly rebounded following the legislative announcements. Institutional interest remains robust, with Bitcoin ETFs attracting $402.99 million in inflows on Tuesday and ether funds receiving $192.3 million, as reported by SoSoValue.
