Passengers from hantavirus ship arrive in US; 3 people in biocontainment

The MV Hondius cruise ship, which has been at the center of an alarming hantavirus outbreak, has docked in the Canary Islands near Tenerife and is currently undergoing an evacuation process. Amid this situation, health officials have confirmed one additional case linked to the outbreak as passengers disembark from the vessel. As of Monday morning, the World Health Organization announced that the last group of passengers is anticipated to be evacuated today. Out of the 147 individuals originally on board, a team of thirty crew members will remain to navigate the ship back to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. All evacuated passengers are being transported via specially arranged repatriation flights, coordinated by Spanish authorities alongside the World Health Organization and various national health officials. During the evacuation efforts, a new case was confirmed in a French national who tested positive while returning home. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in this outbreak to nine, including three fatalities: a Dutch couple and a German woman. There is speculation about a potential tenth case involving a U.S. passenger, who tested 'mildly positive' after evacuation. However, the World Health Organization has labeled this result as inconclusive and is awaiting further confirmation before officially updating the case statistics. On Sunday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a statement that included an error, indicating that 17 American citizens were repatriated on a non-commercial flight. In reality, the repatriated passengers were flown to Omaha, Nebraska, where they were taken to the National Quarantine Unit located at the Nebraska Medical Center, which also houses a National Biocontainment Unit.
