A single errant character in the Linux kernel allows attacker to gain root

Cybersecurity experts have identified a significant vulnerability within the Linux operating system that could enable unauthorized users to gain root access. This issue, cataloged as CVE-2026-23111, stems from an unexpected source—a single misplaced character in the kernel's code. The flaw resides in the nf_tables subsystem, which is integral to the Linux kernel's packet filtering functionalities. This subsystem replaces older systems like iptables and is vital for managing firewall rules effectively. The vulnerability arises from a misused exclamation point, which has triggered a use-after-free condition. This type of vulnerability is particularly dangerous as it can lead to memory corruption, allowing malicious code to be executed from improperly released memory areas. With CVE-2026-23111, even users with unprivileged access can exploit this flaw to escalate their permissions to root level. The attack works by interfering with the deletion of verdicts within the nf_tables framework. These verdicts decide whether a packet aligns with a specific rule that necessitates a certain action. Interestingly, the process can leverage catchall elements, which act like wildcards when no other rules are matched, making this vulnerability even more perilous.
