From content to commerce: Creator economy to add $25 billion to India’s e-commerce by 2030

India's creator economy is evolving into a pivotal component of the nation's commerce landscape. A recent report by Deloitte and Google, titled The $250 Billion Commerce Frontier, reveals that creator-led initiatives are projected to contribute approximately $25 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) to the e-commerce sector by 2030. This shift in the marketplace signals a transformative change in consumer behavior regarding product discovery and purchasing. The report highlights that creators will play a critical role in guiding buyers with authentic content, live demonstrations, trusted reviews, and expert advice in various categories. Currently, around 28% of consumers are discovering new products through creators, and an impressive 63% place their trust in influencers for product recommendations, indicating a significant shift from conventional advertising to peer-driven discovery. India's e-commerce market is on track to expand to $250 billion by 2030, with creators expected to be instrumental in this growth. The traditional marketing funnel is undergoing a collapse, as the report states that content is no longer merely for entertainment but is reshaping how consumers discover, prefer, and decide on purchases. The rise of short-form videos, live streams, and creator-led storefronts is transforming passive viewing into active purchasing. Smaller towns are anticipated to be the next frontier for e-commerce growth, with creators serving as the vital link. While over 480 million users in Tier-2 cities and smaller towns are engaging with online video, only about 35% have made online purchases. The report estimates that creators could introduce between 50 to 60 million new online shoppers from these regions by 2030, addressing trust issues and simplifying the buying process. Moreover, the future of the creator economy appears to hinge on their ownership of the transaction layer. The report indicates that creator-owned storefronts and shoppable online videos will enhance conversion rates and improve clarity in attribution. Globally, this model is already gaining traction through livestream commerce and integrated checkout systems. In India, the increase in video consumption, coupled with advancements in payment and logistics, is paving the way for this model to gain significant traction. The number of content creators has surged nearly threefold in recent years, now estimated to be between 3.5 and 4.5 million, reflecting the democratization of content creation and the growing demand for digital influence.
