A crane accident at SpaceX's South Texas launch facility has raised concerns, but city officials in the newly established Starbase have remained tight-lipped about the situation. The incident occurred on June 23, as the crane was engaged in cleanup operations following a recent rocket explosion at the site. Video footage of the collapse, captured by Lab Padre—a regular content creator at the SpaceX facility—offers a distant view of the event, leaving uncertainty about whether anyone was injured. Despite the seriousness of the incident, SpaceX has not issued a public statement acknowledging the collapse and has not responded to inquiries from TechCrunch. This incident marks a pivotal moment for Starbase, Texas, which operates under the governance of SpaceX executives. Following a recent Starship explosion at the facility, city officials briefly addressed that event on social media but have not commented on the crane collapse, ignoring multiple requests for information from TechCrunch. The collapse is one of the first tests of Starbase's commitment to transparency, particularly as it is financially tied to SpaceX—having recently secured a $1.5 million loan from the company to support its operations through September 2025. The concept of creating Starbase was introduced by Elon Musk in 2021, and it was officially incorporated this past May, with a majority of its residents being SpaceX employees. Bobby Peden, the vice president of Texas Test and Launch at SpaceX, has taken on the role of mayor, with other city officials having strong ties to the company. Recent developments have seen the city issuing warnings to residents about potential changes to property rights and initiating security measures at the request of SpaceX. While city officials have indicated that they will grant access to emergency services as needed, it remains unclear if such services were required at the time of the crane incident. The Cameron County Sheriff's department reported no calls related to the accident. Meanwhile, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has begun an investigation into the collapse, a process that could be lengthy. SpaceX's history with worker safety has been contentious, and the relationship between Musk’s companies and OSHA has been fraught, including a notable incident in 2019 where Tesla denied inspectors access to its factory.
