Jim Cramer fears SpaceX's IPO could be 'destructive' for the rest of market

Jim Cramer, the host of CNBC's 'Mad Money,' expressed serious concerns regarding speculative behavior in the IPO market during his Friday broadcast. He highlighted the upcoming initial public offering (IPO) of Elon Musk's SpaceX, which is set to launch in June, as a potential catalyst for another surge in speculative trading. Cramer cautioned against a repeat of past mistakes, referencing the recent IPO of AI chipmaker Cerebras Systems, which he believes could ignite intense demand for SpaceX shares. Reports indicate that the valuation of SpaceX, which encompasses ventures like Starlink, social media platform X, and the Grok chatbot, could reach between $1.75 trillion and $2 trillion. While Cramer acknowledged the excitement surrounding Musk and his innovative companies, he warned that the stock price could become disconnected from actual performance if too few shares are made available during the IPO. "If SpaceX issues just a sliver of stock, this company could have a $5 trillion valuation," Cramer stated, emphasizing the risk of creating a bubble. He also noted that this could set a concerning precedent for other high-profile tech firms, particularly in artificial intelligence, like OpenAI and Anthropic, which are contemplating their own public offerings. Cramer cautioned investors about the potential consequences of a flurry of tech IPOs, suggesting that it might lead to a sell-off of existing shares as investors seek liquidity for new opportunities. He reiterated a fundamental principle of market behavior, saying, "The stock market, like any other market, is all about supply and demand. Too much supply and the market breaks down." Looking ahead, Cramer urged IPO underwriters to be mindful of their strategies, advocating for a responsible approach to avoid excessive initial price surges similar to those seen during the dot-com bubble, which ended in disaster. "I hope the underwriters act responsibly rather than engineering the pops of a lifetime," he concluded.
