US, French authorities confirm arrest of BreachForums hackers

Authorities in the United States and France have announced the apprehension of five individuals linked to a prominent cybercrime forum, as part of a coordinated crackdown on hacking activities. The U.S. Department of Justice revealed on Thursday that British national Kai West, aged 25, has been indicted on multiple charges, including his role as a notorious hacker known as IntelBroker. West is accused of orchestrating a protracted hacking operation that reportedly inflicted over $25 million in damages across more than 40 victims. These targets included a telecommunications company, a municipal healthcare provider, and an internet service provider. The Department of Justice alleges that in one instance, West attempted to sell sensitive personal information of patients, including names, Social Security numbers, and health-related details. Described as the leader of a hacking collective referred to as CyberN[——], West's group was said to frequent a specific internet forum. While the forum was not explicitly named in the indictment, it is heavily implied to be BreachForums, which was dismantled by a global coalition of law enforcement in 2023 and 2024. West was arrested in France earlier this February and is currently facing extradition to the U.S. The indictment also mentions four co-conspirators, who remain unnamed and were reportedly arrested in France earlier this week. Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced that these arrests targeted individuals believed to be key administrators of BreachForums and part of a group known as ShinyHunters, raising hopes for a permanent closure of the site. The prosecutor confirmed West's arrest in France and noted that it aligns with the U.S. authorities' announcements. When asked about the unnamed associates, a representative from the U.S. Justice Department declined to comment on uncharged individuals. BreachForums was infamous in the cybercriminal underworld for facilitating the sale of hacking tools and trading stolen data, including that of well-known companies such as 23andMe. Following the arrest of its administrator, Conor Brian Fitzpatrick, also known as Pompompurin, the forum was seized and shut down in 2023, only to be relaunched and subsequently shut down again in 2024. West now faces serious charges, including conspiracy to commit computer intrusions and wire fraud.
