Warner Bros.' unexpected decision to shelve the live-action/animated film, Coyote vs. Acme, in 2023 ignited significant backlash from both industry professionals and fans alike. However, the film is finally making its way to audiences, thanks to its new distributor, Ketchup Entertainment, which recently unveiled an intriguing trailer. The trailer presents a captivating premise: Wile E. Coyote, tired of being thwarted by ACME's faulty products in his relentless pursuit of the Road Runner, decides to take legal action against the company. This brilliant concept draws inspiration from a well-known satirical piece by Ian Frazier, also titled "Coyote vs. Acme," published in The New Yorker back in 1990. Although development of the film began in 2018, it boasts a talented team behind the script, including the acclaimed James Gunn. With a star-studded cast and the film completed ahead of its originally planned release in July 2023, expectations were high. However, Warner Bros. shifted gears to promote Barbie, leading to the cancellation of Coyote vs. Acme as part of a tax write-off strategy, a fate that also befell other Warner productions like Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt. The public's outcry compelled the studio to reconsider and allowed the filmmakers to explore offers from other companies. Netflix, Amazon, and Paramount all expressed interest, but Warner Bros. rejected their bids, which did not meet the studio's $75–$80 million price expectation. Co-star Will Forte even commented in February 2024 that he initially presumed the film was subpar, but upon viewing it, he was pleasantly surprised, declaring it "incredible!" Ultimately, Warner Bros. sold the rights to Ketchup Entertainment for $50 million, a price lower than their initial ask. Yet, the important takeaway is that audiences will finally have the chance to experience Coyote vs. Acme soon.
