Sam Altman makes surprise courtroom appearance as potential jurors slam AI, Elon Musk

In a surprising turn of events, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, made a rare courtroom appearance on Monday in California as jury selection began for the high-profile legal battle with Elon Musk. Dressed in a dark suit and white shirt, Altman was seen in the Oakland courtroom where potential jurors expressed their critical opinions about artificial intelligence and Musk, known as the wealthiest individual in the world. Musk was notably absent from the initial proceedings of this federal civil trial, which features two of the tech sector's most influential billionaires. As this is a civil case, neither party is mandated to be present unless they are testifying. Until now, both Musk and Altman have primarily allowed their legal teams to handle the case, with only occasional public sparring on social media. The lawsuit, filed by Musk two years ago, accuses Altman, OpenAI, and president Greg Brockman of intentionally misleading him into co-founding the company in 2015. Musk's legal claim seeks over $100 billion in damages, alongside significant changes to the structure of OpenAI, the organization valued at $850 billion and responsible for ChatGPT. As the courtroom saga unfolds, tensions have escalated on Musk's X platform, where he derogatorily branded Altman as “Scam Altman” and OpenAI dismissed the lawsuit as a “baseless and jealous bid to derail a competitor.” Musk is anticipated to take the stand in the lengthy trial, alongside other notable tech figures, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. In his lawsuit, Musk argues that he invested tens of millions into OpenAI, supporting its original mission to create an AI for public good, only to see that goal jeopardized by its partnership with Microsoft, which is also implicated in the lawsuit.
