TCL’s German QLED ban puts pressure on TV brands to be more honest about QDs

A recent court decision in Munich has placed TCL in a difficult position, as the court ruled against the company's right to market certain televisions under the QLED (quantum dot light-emitting diode) label. The court determined that these models do not possess the quantum dot structure and performance typically associated with QLED technology. This ruling is expected to increase transparency in the television marketing landscape. Samsung, a major competitor, has long opposed TCL’s use of the QLED designation. The company previously submitted results from tests conducted by Intertek, a well-known testing and certification firm, which indicated that TCL's models, including the 65Q651G, 65Q681G, and 75Q651G, did not contain sufficient quantities of cadmium and indium—key materials used in true QD TVs. The tests utilized rigorous detection standards, revealing that TCL's offerings might lack the advanced color capabilities promised by QLED technology. Despite TCL's claims of having strong evidence to support its marketing of QLED televisions, industry assessments suggest a different reality. Analysis and discussions with experts indicate that while TCL's TVs may include some quantum dots, they do not have enough to deliver a significantly broader color gamut compared to non-QD competitors. It is common for more affordable TV models to primarily rely on phosphors or a mix of phosphors and quantum dots, which can lead to inferior color performance. The controversy does not end with TCL; other manufacturers, including Samsung, have also faced scrutiny for promoting their products as QD or QLED despite a heavy reliance on phosphors. The intense competition between Samsung and TCL raises questions about the objectivity of Samsung-commissioned tests. With the recent court ruling emphasizing the misleading nature of TCL's marketing for its QLED870-series in Europe, the television industry may be on the brink of a significant shift towards more honest marketing practices regarding quantum dot technology.
