US forced to disclose its climate working group’s communications

A recent ruling by a judge has unveiled significant issues surrounding the Trump administration's formation of its Climate Working Group. The judge concluded that the administration breached legal protocols in establishing this group, which had aimed to challenge the legitimacy of greenhouse gas regulations. The judge's decision pointed out that the government attempted to operate the Climate Working Group as an official advisory entity while neglecting to adhere to multiple legal requirements that govern such bodies. Although the Department of Energy (DOE) disbanded the group to sidestep further legal challenges, documents obtained during the proceedings have now brought to light the group’s internal communications. This legal battle stems from a Supreme Court ruling that mandated the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assess the dangers posed by greenhouse gases to the American public. This led to an endangerment finding during the Obama administration, establishing the groundwork for the EPA to enforce regulations on carbon emissions under the Clean Air Act. The scientific evidence supporting this finding was robust, remaining unchallenged during the initial Trump presidency. However, the latter Trump administration has embarked on a mission to reverse these regulations. To lend an air of scientific legitimacy to this effort, the DOE convened a group of noted climate skeptics, anticipating that they would generate a report filled with questionable critiques of established climate science. This expectation was met, leading to a strong backlash from the scientific community, which quickly mobilized to address the numerous inaccuracies and shortcomings outlined in the report.
