U.S. court bars OpenAI from using ‘Cameo’

A federal district court in Northern California has delivered a significant ruling in favor of Cameo, a platform renowned for offering personalized video messages from celebrities. The court has mandated that OpenAI must stop using the term 'Cameo' in connection with its products and services. The controversy arose when OpenAI utilized the name 'Cameo' for its AI-driven video generation application, Sora 2, which allowed users to incorporate digital representations of themselves into AI-generated videos. In a decision issued on Saturday, the court determined that the name 'Cameo' was likely to create confusion among users. The court dismissed OpenAI's defense that the term was simply descriptive, asserting instead that it implies rather than describes the feature. In November, the court had already issued a temporary restraining order against OpenAI, leading the company to rebrand the feature as 'Characters.' Cameo's CEO, Steven Galanis, expressed satisfaction with the ruling, describing it as a crucial victory for the company and its marketplace. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Cameo brand, which he noted has been cultivated over nearly a decade, representing talent-friendly interactions. Galanis stated, "We will continue to vigorously defend our intellectual property against any platform that attempts to trade on the goodwill and recognition we have worked so hard to establish." In response to the court's decision, an OpenAI representative expressed disagreement with the claim that anyone can assert exclusive ownership over the word 'cameo,' indicating the company's intention to continue its legal defense. This ruling comes as OpenAI finds itself embroiled in multiple intellectual property disputes. Recently, the company also abandoned the 'IO' branding for its upcoming hardware products. Furthermore, in November, digital library app OverDrive filed a lawsuit against OpenAI regarding the use of 'Sora' for its video generation application, highlighting the ongoing legal challenges the company faces with various artists, creatives, and media organizations over copyright issues.
