A U.S. District Judge has confirmed the penalties that Google will face following a ruling on its monopoly in internet search. This decision comes after a landmark case in which Google was found to be illegally dominating the market. In September, Judge Amit Mehta ruled against the most severe penalties proposed by the Department of Justice, which included a drastic measure to force the sale of Google's Chrome browser—an essential tool that supports its advertising revenue by collecting user data. Following the judge's announcement, Alphabet's stock soared by 8% in after-hours trading, indicating that investors viewed the consequences as relatively mild given the significant nature of the case. Despite the optimistic market reaction, some analysts caution that the ruling could still have repercussions for Google. On Friday, Judge Mehta provided further insights into the finalized remedies. His earlier decision allowed Google to engage in payments for preloading its products but prohibited exclusive contracts tied to such payments or licensing agreements. Additionally, Google must ease restrictions on access to search data. The judge also mandated that Google share specific search index data and user interaction metrics, while excluding advertising data from this requirement. The antitrust proceedings commenced in September 2023, and as the legal landscape continues to evolve, further updates are expected in this ongoing saga.
