Coursera and Udemy enter a merger agreement valued at around $2.5B

In a significant development for the online education sector, Coursera and Udemy have announced a merger agreement valued at around $2.5 billion. This strategic move will see Coursera acquiring Udemy through an all-stock transaction, set to reshape the landscape of digital learning. The merger is expected to be completed in the latter half of next year, contingent on regulatory approval and the nod from shareholders. Both companies are navigating a turbulent market, having experienced revenue growth in the third quarter of 2025, yet witnessing a decline in their share prices. This downturn points to a growing skepticism among investors regarding the future performance of these platforms. The merger aims to alleviate these concerns by combining their strengths to enhance shareholder value and foster long-term growth. Udemy’s CEO, Hugo Sarrazin, emphasized the advantages this merger will bring, stating, "Through this combination with Coursera, we will create meaningful benefits for our learners, enterprise customers, and instructors, while delivering significant value to our shareholders, who will participate in the substantial upside potential of the combined company." As the online education market expands, particularly with advancements in artificial intelligence, Sarrazin noted that the merger will expedite the development of AI-enhanced products. Coursera has recently integrated with OpenAI’s ChatGPT ecosystem and announced a content collaboration with Anthropic. This merger announcement follows closely on the heels of Udemy launching its “AI-powered microlearning experience,” designed to offer students brief, tailored lessons that accommodate their hectic schedules. Both companies are optimistic that their union will position them to better tackle the evolving demands of the workplace, especially as AI literacy becomes increasingly essential. A surge in job postings requiring AI skills has been noted, with surveys indicating that one in three hiring managers dismiss candidates lacking these competencies. Coursera’s CEO, Greg Hart, remarked, "We’re at a pivotal moment in which AI is rapidly redefining the skills required for every job across every industry. Organizations and individuals around the world need a platform that is as agile as the new and emerging skills learners must master."
