Here’s what to expect from the fiery, 14-minute return of Artemis II

As the Artemis II mission approaches its much-anticipated return, excitement builds for the dramatic splashdown scheduled for Friday evening. The four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft are set to make a historic re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, with little chance of deviation from their planned course, despite any minor concerns that may arise. Predicted for 8:07 PM ET (00:07 UTC Saturday), the splashdown will take place a few hundred miles off the Southern California coast. This phase marks a pivotal moment in the mission, embodying a crucial step in lunar exploration. Today, the Orion spacecraft may conduct a small burn to refine its trajectory toward Earth, ensuring a precise entry path over the Pacific Ocean, southeast of Hawaii. At 7:33 PM, just 44 minutes prior to splashdown, the Crew Module will detach from the Service Module. This separation is significant as the Service Module, constructed by the European Space Agency, has been vital for power and propulsion throughout the mission. With this detachment, the Crew Module will reveal its heat shield for the first time, which is essential for enduring the intense heat generated during re-entry. Only four minutes later, the Crew Module will utilize its reaction control thrusters to maneuver away from the Service Module, allowing for a final adjustment of its entry angle.
