SpaceX is gearing up for the tenth full-scale test flight of its massive Starship rocket, following the Federal Aviation Administration's recent approval for the launch. Engineers successfully conducted a crucial propulsion system test, known as a 'spin prime' test, at the launch site in South Texas on Wednesday. After this, the rocket was transported back to a hangar for thorough inspections, heat shield enhancements, and other final preparations for its upcoming launch. The launch is slated for no earlier than next Sunday, August 24, at 6:30 PM local time in Texas (23:30 UTC). As with its predecessors, the towering 403-foot-tall (123-meter) rocket will lift off from SpaceX's facilities at Starbase, Texas, located just north of the US-Mexico border. This impressive rocket features a powerful booster stage, dubbed Super Heavy, equipped with 33 methane-fueled Raptor engines, while the upper stage, simply referred to as Starship, is powered by six Raptor engines. With this flight, SpaceX aims to overcome several technical challenges that have hindered the Starship program. The company faced a series of disappointing test flights earlier this year, experiencing four failures between January and May, along with the destruction of a Starship vehicle during a ground test in June. This string of setbacks contrasts sharply with the previous year, when SpaceX successfully launched Starship four times, achieving significant milestones, including the first recovery of a Super Heavy booster at the launch pad, demonstrating a novel approach to reusing the rocket's first stage. As of now, Starship's performance in 2025 has been less than stellar, with the rocket struggling to complete a full suborbital test flight. This has resulted in delays for future program objectives, including the ambitious plans for recovering and reusing the upper stage of the rocket, as well as demonstrating in-orbit refueling for another rocket—both of which would mark groundbreaking achievements in the realm of space exploration.
