Routine vaccines may cut dementia risk—experts have startling hypothesis on how

Recent research suggests a fascinating link between routine vaccinations and a reduced risk of developing dementia. Vaccines targeting seasonal flu, RSV, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap), pneumococcal infections, hepatitis A and B, and typhoid have all shown associations with lower dementia rates. Notably, vaccination against shingles appears to have the strongest correlation, with ongoing studies further supporting this connection. As the evidence accumulates, scientists are intrigued by a potential explanation: these vaccines, while aimed at specific pathogens, may be inadvertently safeguarding our cognitive health. This mechanism engages the adaptive immune responses, known for their ability to learn and remember specific threats. Conversely, the innate immune responses serve as the body’s first line of defense, employing non-specific reactions to tackle germs and injuries. These innate defenses include physical barriers like skin and mucous membranes, as well as immune cells that can swiftly respond to invaders, providing rapid, generic inflammation when necessary.
