In a significant strategic maneuver, CoreWeave has announced its acquisition of Core Scientific for an impressive $9 billion in an all-stock transaction. This merger is set to enhance CoreWeave's capabilities by providing access to over one gigawatt of data center capacity, which is sufficient to power more than 850,000 households. The expanded infrastructure will be pivotal for CoreWeave as it gears up to support AI training and inference workloads, a sector that continues to experience explosive growth. Similar to CoreWeave, Core Scientific initially focused on Bitcoin mining but is now pivoting its GPU resources towards running and training advanced generative AI models. The race among cloud infrastructure providers to expand their data center capabilities is intensifying, driven by the relentless computational needs of AI enterprises. Just last week, a report from Bloomberg revealed that OpenAI has secured an additional 4.5 gigawatts of data center capacity from Oracle, further enhancing their already substantial Stargate infrastructure collaboration.
