CoreWeave says Nvidia has its back on data center financing

In a recent conference call, a CoreWeave executive revealed that the company plans to use Nvidia as a guarantor for its lease payments. This strategic move aims to secure the necessary financing for expanding its data centers, according to insights shared by an analyst who attended the call. Alex Platt from D.A. Davidson noted that this arrangement mirrors a similar guarantee that Google provided to a partner for financing a data center project. Nvidia’s support represents a significant financial backing for CoreWeave, which is navigating the substantial costs associated with establishing artificial intelligence infrastructure. Beyond this lease guarantee, Nvidia has already invested billions in CoreWeave and previously committed to purchasing up to $6.3 billion in computing capacity if CoreWeave is unable to sell it to its clients. The announcement of Nvidia’s involvement coincided with a $2 billion acquisition of CoreWeave stock, underscoring Nvidia's commitment to accelerating the growth of CoreWeave's AI computing capabilities. A spokesperson for CoreWeave explained that while the company will continue to procure its own capacity, it will also selectively collaborate with Nvidia to expedite the acquisition of essential resources like land and power. This partnership could involve various forms of financial collaboration, depending on the opportunities that arise. Despite the financial support from Nvidia, the spokesperson emphasized that this should not be seen as CoreWeave's primary means of securing capacity or as an indication of its inability to independently acquire infrastructure. The potential lease guarantee is a testament to how CoreWeave is leveraging partnerships to manage the financial demands of its ambitious data center expansion. Moody's has projected that CoreWeave may invest over $30 billion in capital expenditures by 2026, a stark increase from its anticipated spending in 2025. Platt noted that Nvidia's deepening involvement has shifted investor sentiment positively towards CoreWeave, which had previously been lukewarm. Recently, Business Insider reported challenges in securing third-party financing for a CoreWeave data center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Although Blue Owl, a prominent lender, provided a short-term loan of $500 million for the project, further financing details remain unclear. CoreWeave's stock experienced a dip following the report but has since shown signs of recovery. The company has reassured stakeholders that the Lancaster project is fully funded and progressing as planned. It remains uncertain if CoreWeave will pursue Nvidia's guarantee for lease payments related to the Lancaster facility, as such backing could enhance the company's appeal to lenders while potentially lowering borrowing costs due to Nvidia's strong credit rating. Additionally, reports indicate that CoreWeave is seeking $8.5 billion in financing from various lenders, including Morgan Stanley, based on existing contracts with major clients like Meta. As CoreWeave approaches its fourth-quarter earnings announcement for 2025, the company’s infrastructure spending and portfolio growth will be critical indicators of its ability to capitalize on the booming AI market. Previous projections estimated that CoreWeave would end 2025 with 850 megawatts of operational data center facilities. However, the company is currently managing a debt load that could escalate to $38 billion by 2026 due to its ongoing investments. Despite the risks associated with its increasing debt, CoreWeave anticipates significant revenue from its leases and infrastructure projects. According to Moody's, the company has an impressive backlog of $55.6 billion in contracted revenue, which represents rent that will be collected once its AI facilities are operational. If CoreWeave successfully scales its operations and realizes this revenue, its credit rating could improve, leading to lower borrowing costs and enhanced profitability. S&P Global Ratings currently rates CoreWeave at B+ with a stable outlook, highlighting its growth potential in the AI data center landscape.
