New AI lab Core Automation 'nerdsniped' researchers from Anthropic, Google DeepMind

A new player in the AI landscape, Core Automation, is rapidly gaining attention by recruiting top talent from leading firms like Anthropic and Google DeepMind. Founded by Jerry Tworek, a former researcher at OpenAI, the startup aims to create what it calls 'the world's most automated AI lab.' In a recent post on X, the company outlined its ambitious mission to develop systems that optimize and automate work processes, starting with the research phase itself. Tworek, who serves as the CEO and cofounder of Core Automation, has already drawn in notable researchers such as Rohan Anil from Anthropic. Anil, who recently announced his departure from the company, disclosed that Tworek's persuasive vision inspired him to join this new venture. "It was one of the best places to work for a researcher," he noted, acknowledging the allure of Tworek's innovative project. Additionally, Anmol Gulati, a research scientist from Google DeepMind, has also joined Core Automation, expressing enthusiasm about collaborating with exceptional individuals. In his own post, Gulati emphasized a shift away from traditional research paradigms, advocating for new learning algorithms and architectures that could revolutionize the field. Core Automation boasts a team comprised of experts who have previously contributed to groundbreaking AI models and architectures. This trend of researchers transitioning from established labs to startups isn't new; similar moves have been observed in the past, such as Yann LeCun's departure from Meta to establish Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs, which focuses on creating AI systems that better reflect reality. As competition for AI talent heats up, startups are increasingly positioning themselves as attractive alternatives to larger companies. They offer competitive salaries, equity packages, and the promise of greater impact and ownership in a smaller work environment. According to Shawn Thorne, managing director at executive search firm True Search, salary offerings at startups have surged as they vie for top-tier talent, with equity playing a crucial role in enticing researchers to join their ranks. To further appeal to potential recruits, many startups are providing incentives like cofounder titles and opportunities for independent research, making them a compelling option for those looking to leave traditional corporate environments.
