White House app auto-downloads to government phones, can’t be uninstalled

In May, the White House made headlines with its directive to automatically install a new app on the work phones of countless government workers. However, the rollout has sparked significant backlash among federal employees who find themselves unable to remove the app from their devices. Workers from various departments, including the USDA, State Department, and Department of Labor, expressed their frustrations to WIRED, requesting anonymity due to concerns about potential repercussions. Many were alarmed to discover the app suddenly appeared on their phones, and attempts to uninstall it have proven futile. One USDA employee remarked, "I deleted it as a test, and it came right back." Launched in March, the app promises features such as real-time updates, live events, and direct communication with the presidency, according to information on the White House website. It appears to be a version available to the general public via Apple and Google app stores. Notably, the app includes a feature that allows users to text President Trump, which auto-populates the message with the phrase, "Greatest President Ever." In the app's social section, users can view posts from the White House's official X account, Trump's Truth Social updates, and videos shared on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Its news section aggregates White House press releases, briefings, and selected articles from outlets such as Fox News, Breitbart, and The New York Post, all of which tend to highlight favorable views of the administration while critiquing Democrats. One disillusioned employee described the app's content as "pure unadulterated propaganda," questioning whether even Fox's standards were too high. Furthermore, the app's privacy policy, accessible through the Apple App Store, links to the White House's official privacy page but offers scant details regarding the app's own data practices, only providing an email contact without any comprehensive policy descriptions.
