FCC derided as “Federal Censorship Commission” after pushing Jimmy Kimmel off ABC

In a surprising turn of events, ABC announced the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show, following pressure from Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr. Carr made headlines after urging Disney, ABC's parent company, to take action against Kimmel over remarks he made regarding Charlie Kirk's killer. During his appearance on a podcast hosted by right-wing commentator Benny Johnson, Carr warned, "We can do this the easy way or the hard way," suggesting that the network could face repercussions if it did not comply. Carr's comments prompted Nexstar, an ABC affiliate, to announce that it would preempt Kimmel's show, leading to ABC's confirmation of the indefinite suspension. The decision reportedly came from the top, with Disney CEO Robert Iger and TV division head Dana Walden playing pivotal roles. In light of these developments, ABC has been contacted for further comment, and updates will follow. The move has sparked outrage among several House Democratic leaders, who have accused Carr of misusing his position to intimidate ABC and manipulate its programming. They called his actions a disgrace and demanded his resignation. Additionally, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has indicated plans for an investigation. Anna Gomez, the sole Democrat on the Republican-majority FCC, criticized the suspension as a "cowardly corporate capitulation" by ABC, warning that it jeopardizes the fundamental principles of the First Amendment. She asserted that the FCC lacks the authority to regulate content or penalize broadcasters for government-disliked speech, highlighting concerns over the influence of large corporations with business interests before the agency. This incident raises significant questions about free speech, corporate power, and government influence in media.
