Rocket Report: Some Canadians don’t want a spaceport; Falcon hits 600 landings

In the latest edition of the Rocket Report, significant developments in the space industry are making headlines, particularly surrounding the New Glenn rocket's third launch. Blue Origin celebrated a thrilling moment as a previously used rocket successfully lifted off and landed on a barge after a 15-minute flight. However, excitement turned to disappointment when the mission faced its first setback; the AST SpaceMobile satellite was lost due to an upper stage failure attributed to a valve issue, a common source of problems in the aerospace sector. Meanwhile, plans for a new spaceport in Nova Scotia have sparked considerable debate among local residents. Recently, Canadian National Defense Minister David McGuinty announced a significant investment of $200 million over the next decade for Maritime Launch Services, which will be using a dedicated launch pad. This has not been well received by everyone, as some community members, led by resident Marie Lumsden, have voiced their opposition. Lumsden, writing for the Halifax Examiner, shared a stark image of the small concrete pad that represents the entirety of the proposed spaceport. Local opposition is organized under the group Action Against the Canso Spaceport, citing serious concerns about the project and its management. The group has raised multiple issues, including the environmental assessment conducted by Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change, which they argue fails to address the potential risks of launching rockets powered by a mix of UDMH, LOX, and kerosene fuels. Lumsden criticized the approval process for the project, claiming it was fundamentally flawed and influenced by lobbyists and political connections, rather than genuine environmental considerations. This ongoing dispute highlights the tension between advancing aerospace initiatives and ensuring community and environmental safety.
