A consumer watchdog issued a warning about Google’s AI agent shopping protocol — Google says she’s wrong

In response to Google's recent unveiling of its Universal Commerce Protocol aimed at enhancing AI-driven shopping experiences, a consumer advocacy group has issued a warning. Lindsay Owens, the executive director of Groundwork Collaborative, expressed her concerns in a widely shared post on X, which garnered nearly 400,000 views. She cautioned consumers about Google's plan to incorporate personalized upselling into its shopping features, suggesting that it would involve analyzing user chat data to potentially inflate prices. Owens highlighted elements of Google's roadmap and detailed specifications, which indicate a feature designed to facilitate upselling, enabling retailers to promote higher-priced products through AI shopping agents. Additionally, she raised alarms over Google's strategies to modify pricing based on aspects like new-member discounts and loyalty rewards, as described by CEO Sundar Pichai at the National Retail Federation conference. In response to these allegations, Google took to X and communicated directly with TechCrunch to refute the claims. The company asserted that the allegations about pricing manipulation are unfounded and that it enforces strict guidelines preventing merchants from displaying inflated prices on its platform. Google clarified that the term 'upselling' refers to showcasing premium product options, emphasizing that consumers retain full control over their purchasing decisions. Furthermore, Google introduced its 'Direct Offers' initiative, which allows merchants to provide lower-priced deals or additional services like complimentary shipping, explicitly stating that it does not enable price hikes. A Google representative emphasized that the Business Agent feature does not possess the capability to alter retailer pricing based on individual data. Owens also pointed out concerns regarding how Google manages shopper identity, suggesting that the complexity of consent might be obscured. In response, Google maintained that the intention is to streamline user consent processes rather than conceal agreement terms. Despite Google's assurances, Owens’s broader argument raises significant issues about the potential for AI-driven shopping agents to allow merchants to tailor prices based on consumer behavior and willingness to pay, a practice she terms 'surveillance pricing.' While Google claims its agents cannot perform such actions, the company’s core identity as an advertising platform raises questions about its incentives. With a recent federal court ruling mandating Google to amend certain business practices due to anticompetitive behavior, the discussion surrounding the ethical implications of AI in commerce becomes increasingly pertinent. As excitement grows over AI's potential to alleviate mundane tasks, the risks of exploitation in a landscape dominated by major tech companies cannot be ignored. This opens doors for independent startups to develop alternatives in AI-powered shopping. Early innovators like Dupe and Beni are already paving the way by offering solutions that empower consumers to find affordable options in furniture and fashion. For now, the age-old advice remains: consumers should tread carefully in the evolving world of AI shopping.
