Construction delays hit 40% of US data centers planned for 2026

The ambitious expansion of AI data centers in Silicon Valley, which has seen investments in the hundreds of billions, is now facing major obstacles. These facilities, which demand as much electricity as several hundred thousand homes, are grappling with significant construction delays and local opposition. Recent satellite imagery has revealed that around 40% of planned data center projects in the United States may not meet their completion deadlines this year. The Financial Times utilized satellite data from SynMax, a company specializing in geospatial analytics, to assess the progress on these data centers. By comparing this visual data with public statements and permits gathered by IIR Energy, the analysis indicated that key projects from major tech firms including Microsoft, Oracle, and OpenAI are likely to be delayed by over three months. Conversations with industry leaders have brought to light the factors contributing to these delays. Chronic shortages of labor, power, and equipment have been cited as critical issues, along with the lengthy process of obtaining necessary permits. Construction executives working on OpenAI's initiatives specifically pointed out a lack of skilled tradespeople, such as electricians and pipe fitters, to handle multiple ongoing projects. Moreover, the extensive power needs of these planned data centers create a significant energy bottleneck. Utility companies are struggling to keep pace with the demand, facing challenges in enhancing power generation and expanding infrastructure. Compounding these issues are tariffs on imported Chinese equipment, such as transformers, which have further complicated the ambitions of Silicon Valley's AI sector.
