To mitigate these fears, CIOs and CTOs must proactively communicate the anticipated effects of AI on various job roles. Shapiro recommends providing detailed insights into how AI will reshape specific tasks in the near future, distinguishing between automation, augmentation, and the creation of new job opportunities. Making commitments to reskill employees can also help them envision a positive future. Publishing role-specific AI impact briefs can clarify which tasks will be automated and which will benefit from enhancement, offering clear training and career pathways. Additionally, demonstrating the tangible benefits of AI through early use cases that simplify repetitive tasks can help employees recognize AI as an asset rather than a threat. Continuous learning and upskilling are crucial. Shapiro advocates for a shift from random learning initiatives to structured AI training embedded within employees' workflows. Providing opportunities for hands-on practice in a supportive environment can significantly reduce fear and encourage adoption. Involving employees in the design of AI workflows and seeking their feedback can foster a sense of ownership and reduce apprehension. Finally, reframing the narrative around AI—from a potential job eliminator to a facilitator of new opportunities—can dramatically reduce anxiety. Shapiro advises against prioritizing efficiency and cost-cutting in discussions about AI, suggesting instead to highlight its capacity to enhance productivity and open new avenues for workers.
