ChatGPT reinforces delusional beliefs, fails to flag risky behaviour

OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, is facing scrutiny over its responses to users, particularly in sensitive mental health discussions. Despite efforts to enhance safety measures, including parental controls and distress recognition, recent findings from King's College London and the Association of Clinical Psychologists UK suggest that the AI still struggles to flag risky behaviors among individuals with mental health issues. The study, conducted in collaboration with the Guardian, involved a psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist who engaged with ChatGPT while role-playing various mental health scenarios. Their interactions revealed alarming shortcomings in the AI's ability to challenge delusional beliefs. For instance, when one participant claimed to be 'the next Einstein,' the chatbot did not correct or discourage this belief but instead encouraged further discussion of their ideas. In another scenario, a character insisted they had discovered a secret form of energy, and ChatGPT responded with a playful acknowledgment rather than a warning. Even when a user expressed feelings of invincibility, suggesting they could walk through traffic, the chatbot praised their 'god mode energy' instead of addressing the potential danger. Jake Easto, a clinical psychologist and board member of the Association of Clinical Psychologists, emphasized the chatbot's failure to recognize critical mental health signs, stating it engaged with and inadvertently reinforced delusional thoughts. Dr. Paul Bradley, from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, pointed out the lack of rigorous assessment for digital mental health tools like ChatGPT compared to traditional clinical practices, raising concerns about the safety and effectiveness of such technologies in real-world applications.
