Air quality tests around xAI’s Memphis data center raise questions

Elon Musk’s xAI is facing increasing scrutiny in Memphis due to the emissions from natural gas turbines that power its Colossus data center. Local residents have expressed worries regarding potential air pollution, prompting the City of Memphis to release the findings from initial air quality assessments conducted by an independent third party. According to the city, the tests, which evaluated ten different pollutants, showed no immediate danger to public health. However, the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is preparing legal action against xAI on behalf of the NAACP, arguing that the tests failed to include a critical pollutant: ozone, commonly referred to as smog. In a statement, the SELC questioned the decision not to test for this hazardous substance, highlighting the significance of comprehensive air quality evaluations. The air quality testing occurred on June 13 and 16 at three separate locations: downtown Memphis, the Whitehaven neighborhood, and Boxtown. Notably, Boxtown is situated just two miles from the xAI center. The sampling equipment operated for a duration of 10 to 13 hours, but conditions on the testing days were not conducive for pollutant transfer, with winds primarily coming from the south and southwest. One of the testing sites, downtown Memphis, did record formaldehyde; however, the levels were consistent with what is typically found in urban environments. The testing location at City Hall is situated over eight miles from the xAI facility. The SELC criticized the methodology of the testing, pointing out that the monitors were placed too close to buildings in both Boxtown and Whitehaven, potentially skewing the results. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that air sensors be positioned at least six feet above ground level and away from obstructions to ensure accurate measurements.
