Another Google Pixel 6a catches fire after battery-nerfing update

The Pixel 6a, once celebrated for its exceptional value when it debuted in 2022, is now facing serious scrutiny from its users. Initially praised for offering features comparable to the more expensive Pixel 6 models at a fraction of the cost, the phone's reputation is now tarnished due to recent developments. A troubling software update aimed at enhancing battery safety has instead left some users frustrated, as it reportedly diminishes battery life. Google has justified this update, citing the necessity to mitigate the risk of battery failures. However, the situation escalated dramatically when a user reported that their updated Pixel 6a exploded overnight. In July, Google implemented a significant change in its monthly patch for the Pixel 6a, warning that devices with over 400 charge cycles could suffer severe reductions in battery capacity and charging speed. Although Google offered a small amount of Store credit or a complimentary battery replacement in return, many users found the process cumbersome. This incident follows a similar debacle involving the Pixel 4a, where a battery update led to catastrophic failures. A Reddit user, known as /u/footymanageraddict, shared alarming images of what was once a functioning Pixel 6a, now reduced to a charred heap. This is not an isolated case; there have been multiple reports of battery fires linked to the Pixel 6a, prompting Google to issue the contentious safety update. Alarmingly, the affected device was reported to have the battery safety update installed, which raises questions about the effectiveness of these precautions.
