RFK Jr. may be about to demolish preventive health panel, health groups fear

Health and medical organizations across the nation are expressing alarm over recent developments that threaten the framework of preventive healthcare in the United States. This week, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his controversial stance against vaccines, unexpectedly canceled an important meeting of the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). This independent panel, comprised of up to 16 volunteer experts, is responsible for providing evidence-based recommendations on a variety of preventive measures, from colonoscopies to prenatal supplements. The canceled meeting, which was set to address cardiovascular disease, was notably without explanation. This abrupt decision raises concerns reminiscent of Kennedy's earlier actions regarding the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In February, he similarly canceled a scheduled meeting for that committee. Further compounding these worries, Kennedy dismissed all 17 members of the ACIP in June, subsequently appointing a new group of seven members, most of whom lack significant expertise in the relevant fields and share Kennedy's anti-vaccine sentiments. At their first convening, the reformed ACIP not only retracted longstanding recommendations for flu vaccines, based on dubious anti-vaccine claims, but also proposed a review of the routine childhood vaccination schedule, including the measles vaccine. These actions signal a potential shift in the landscape of preventive health that could have far-reaching implications for public health policy.
