Composite gets backing from NFDG for its cross-browser agent tool

Composite, a promising startup founded earlier this year by Yang Fan Yun and Charlie Deane, is set to transform how professionals manage their daily tasks across different web browsers. Unlike AI browsers such as Perplexity’s Comet and Opera’s Neon, which are limited to a single browser, Composite aims to deliver a versatile solution that enhances productivity regardless of the platform being used. Yun, a former product manager at Uber, witnessed firsthand the repetitive and tedious tasks that individuals in various roles—ranging from marketing to security—were forced to perform in their browsers. "I saw people in different roles doing a lot of grunt work in their browsers. It was hindering their ability to fully leverage their skills and education, so I wanted to create a tool to automate this work," Yun explained during a conversation with TechCrunch. Today, Composite announced it has successfully raised $5.6 million in seed funding, with the investment led by NFDG, a venture firm co-founded by Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, alongside contributions from Menlo Ventures and Anthropic’s Anthology Fund. Currently, Composite's solution is available for Mac users and is designed for hassle-free installation via a simple browser extension. The tool enables users to issue commands across various online platforms, streamlining tasks such as managing a Jira backlog, leaving comments on critical bugs, and resolving duplicate issues. Security engineers can leverage Composite to research candidates and draft personalized emails, while marketers can effortlessly generate insight reports from multiple sources. Yun emphasized that while other AI tools tend to focus on non-professional applications like shopping or travel bookings, Composite is tailored for professionals who may not possess technical expertise. "We excel at performing specific actions like clicking on elements or filling in forms, ensuring our users get their work done efficiently," he stated. The agents operate seamlessly within the browsers where users are already logged into their services, eliminating the need for additional connectors and allowing for cross-site functionality. The tool even begins to suggest tasks based on user behavior patterns. In the coming months, Composite plans to enhance this feature and introduce a task scheduling function for recurring activities. What sets Composite apart is its ability to work without requiring users to switch browsers, providing administrators with the option to restrict certain tools and defining which websites are off-limits. Despite a competitive landscape with various startups and established companies like OpenAI and Notion entering the professional task management space, Composite aims to prove its worth. Matt Kraning, a partner at Menlo Ventures, expressed confidence in Composite’s potential to excel in this market. He noted that the tool's intuitive design caters well to professionals handling diverse tasks daily, making it a valuable asset in the world of productivity tools.
