Communities across the nation are expressing their discontent as major tech companies push to establish large data centers in their neighborhoods. Residents are increasingly concerned about potential impacts on water resources, rising electricity costs, and the overall deterioration of their quality of life. Notable environmental activist Erin Brockovich, who gained fame for her advocacy work, has recently lent her voice to this growing movement. In a recent appearance on "The Jim Acosta Show," she highlighted the frustration felt by residents who feel excluded from key decisions affecting their own communities. Brockovich stated that the projects are often introduced with little transparency, leading locals to discover details only after they are well underway. Many proposals are disguised under terms like "warehouses," masking their true purpose as data centers. This lack of openness has only intensified local anger, as residents believe their concerns are being overlooked. Recent months have seen significant pushback against high-profile data center initiatives, such as a major project in Utah, which is backed by investor Kevin O'Leary. This backlash prompted Utah Governor Spencer Cox to announce a new framework aimed at addressing community concerns regarding data center development, emphasizing the need to protect resources and quality of life for Utahns. In a shift towards transparency, Microsoft, which previously utilized nondisclosure agreements during the early stages of its data center projects, announced it would no longer pursue such practices. The tech giant stated that it prioritizes transparent communication with the communities it operates in, aiming to build trust and facilitate meaningful discussions. Microsoft has also introduced a new initiative called the "Community-First AI Infrastructure Plan," which pledges to take responsibility for its electricity use, reduce water consumption, and generate local employment opportunities. Brockovich emphasized that residents are open to receiving difficult information; their primary concern lies in being involved in the decision-making process. "I've worked in communities for 30 years," she remarked. "They handle the truth."
