Commonwealth Fusion lays out the physics of its planned reactor

The quest for fusion power has taken a significant turn, with the scientific community laying the groundwork for practical energy solutions. A key element of this endeavor involves mastering the control of fusion in tokamak-style reactors, particularly through the ITER project, which is currently under construction. However, ITER is not expected to achieve operational hot plasma until the 2030s—a timeline that may see solar energy becoming so affordable that consumers could receive solar panels as promotional items. In contrast, Commonwealth Fusion, an innovative startup, is challenging the status quo by asking, "What if we could achieve fusion now?" Their ambitious project, SPARC, is over 70% complete and is slated to begin operations as early as next year. The company has also secured a site and potential customers for its subsequent power-generating model, known as ARC. Both SPARC and ARC are designed to utilize high-temperature superconductors, which will create an exceptionally strong magnetic field. This technology enables the construction of a more compact reactor, facilitating faster progress towards operational fusion. The extensive experience gathered from years of plasma experimentation in tokamaks gives confidence in the foundational aspects of these plans. However, significant challenges remain, as the details of the technology have yet to be fully explored. To address this, Commonwealth Fusion's scientists have recently published five peer-reviewed papers outlining their vision for ARC. These papers, available in the Journal of Plasma Physics, provide insights into current modeling and highlight the knowledge that must be gained from SPARC to refine the design of a practical fusion reactor.
