Commonwealth Fusion Systems leans on magnets for near-term revenue

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) announced a significant move on Thursday, revealing plans to supply high-temperature superconducting magnets to Realta Fusion. This agreement marks the second in a series of strategic partnerships, indicating that CFS is poised to rely heavily on its magnet technology to generate essential revenue in the near future. According to Rick Needham, COO of CFS, this deal represents the largest of its kind for the company to date. Previously, CFS provided magnets for the WHAM experiment at the University of Wisconsin, a collaboration closely linked to Realta Fusion. The scientific principles guiding WHAM are foundational to Realta’s approach to fusion energy, which utilizes a magnetic mirror reactor design. In this innovative design, plasma is shaped similarly to two connected 2-liter soda bottles, with powerful magnets at each end pushing the plasma back toward the center. The central area is surrounded by weaker magnets, which are more cost-effective to produce. As Realta’s reactors expand, costs per kilowatt-hour are expected to decrease significantly. CFS is also involved in developing a different type of magnetic confinement fusion known as a tokamak. This method employs D-shaped magnets to create strong fields that maintain plasma in a doughnut configuration. CFS has been refining its magnet technology with the goal of enabling its Arc reactor, a future commercial-scale fusion power plant planned for construction in Virginia. Founded in 2018, CFS emerged following the discovery at MIT that a new class of commercially available high-temperature superconductors could support a viable tokamak design. Realta, launched shortly thereafter, aims to revisit the magnetic mirror concept, which has unique engineering benefits, as explained by co-founder and CEO Kieran Furlong. In addition to its collaboration with Realta and WHAM, CFS has licensed its superconducting magnet technology to Type One Fusion, which is exploring a stellarator reactor design. Although this partnership does not include CFS manufacturing magnets for Type One, it could open that door in the future, as noted by Christine Dunn, CFS’s head of external communications. These strategic partnerships are crucial for CFS as they help recoup investments made in magnet production. The company has dedicated seven years and significant financial resources to establish a facility capable of creating high-temperature superconducting tape tailored to fusion specifications. This material is currently being utilized in Sparc, CFS’s demonstration reactor, which is expected to be operational later this year. As work on the commercial-scale Arc reactor ramps up, these deals are vital for keeping the manufacturing facility active. With Sparc nearing completion at 70%, Needham emphasized the importance of supporting Realta with magnet production at this critical juncture. CFS does not perceive Realta and Type One as direct competitors at this stage, given their differing reactor designs. In the broader market, Realta is initially targeting industrial applications that require substantial heat, setting it apart from CFS’s focus. With nearly $3 billion raised to date—representing a significant portion of funding for fusion startups—CFS is in a strong position to continue building essential infrastructure, such as its magnet factory, ahead of competitors. The startup promotes these collaborations as a service to the fusion industry, providing technologies that would be costly for others to develop independently, while also enhancing its access to further venture capital.
