Colossal Labs will release the sounds of dire wolves howling ‘later this year,’ founder says

At a recent panel discussion in London, Ben Lamm, the visionary behind Colossal Labs, and actress Sophie Turner delved into the ambitious initiative to resurrect the long-gone dire wolf. Stirred back into the spotlight due to the popular series 'Game of Thrones,' in which Turner starred, the dire wolf's return is a topic of both intrigue and skepticism. Turner, initially believing dire wolves to be purely fictional, engaged Lamm in a conversation about the feasibility of such a revival. Lamm recounted how his team at Colossal has made strides in bringing these creatures back after their extinction over 10,000 years ago. He shared exciting updates on a recent bio-acoustic project aimed at capturing the unique howls of the dire wolves, which Lamm noted begin vocalizing when they are only three weeks old. The two initial dire wolves, named Romulus and Remus, are now six months old and have been responding to various sounds, including human melodies and owl calls. Lamm expressed enthusiasm about using AI to analyze the wolves' behaviors and vocal patterns, describing their distinctive pitches and inflections. He promised that the findings from this project would be revealed later this year. The wolves are being housed in a sprawling 2,000-acre reserve that boasts an animal hospital, dedicated caretakers, and stringent security measures. Lamm highlighted that the wolves are adapting well and exhibiting natural behaviors, including light predation. Additionally, a new dire wolf named Khalessi, aged three months, is set to join Romulus and Remus. While public response to Colossal’s de-extinction efforts has been mixed, with critics questioning the authenticity of the creatures as they are genetically modified gray wolves, investor interest remains strong. In a recent funding round, the company raised $200 million, pushing its valuation to an impressive $10.2 billion. Lamm also touched on future projects involving other extinct species such as the Tasmanian tiger and the dodo, hinting at an exciting update on the dodo's revival that could emerge this summer.
