Stephen Colbert says CBS forbid interview of Democrat because of FCC threat

Stephen Colbert, the popular talk show host, disclosed that CBS prohibited him from interviewing James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the Texas Senate. This decision stemmed from a potential enforcement of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) equal-time rule affecting late-night and daytime talk shows. During a recent episode of The Late Show, Colbert explained, "Talarico was scheduled to appear, but our network’s legal team explicitly informed us that we could not feature him." He further noted the unusual restriction imposed by the network, which extended to not even being allowed to mention the situation on air. Colbert, however, took the opportunity to discuss the matter, emphasizing the implications of the FCC’s actions. The controversy has roots in a warning issued by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, indicating that late-night and daytime programs might lose their exemption from the equal-time rule. This rule, formally known as the Equal Opportunities Rule, mandates that when a station gives airtime to one political candidate, it must offer similar opportunities to opposing candidates if requested. Traditionally, entertainment talk shows have been granted exemptions under the bona fide news category. Colbert humorously remarked that the equal-time rule is the FCC's most enduring regulation, only surpassed in notoriety by the prohibition against nudity during the Super Bowl. He also criticized Carr's motivations, suggesting that they appeared partisan, especially given Carr's recent statements about potentially revoking the exemption for talk shows, which he claims were driven by political bias.
