No AI, no job: Coinbase CEO fires engineers who didn't adopt new tech

In a striking move, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong disclosed that he has terminated engineers who were unwilling to embrace AI coding tools. This decision followed the crypto exchange's acquisition of enterprise licenses for popular AI platforms, including GitHub Copilot and Cursor. During a recent appearance on the podcast 'Cheeky Pint' alongside Stripe President John Collison, Armstrong emphasized the company's strong commitment to AI integration, stating, "We’re leaning as hard as we can." To enforce this commitment, Coinbase has implemented a stringent one-week deadline for its engineers to familiarize themselves with these AI tools. Armstrong expressed his frustration over initial reports from the team, who suggested a gradual adoption timeline of 50% over the next quarter. He challenged this notion, insisting that every engineer should be onboarded by the week's end. In a direct message within the company's all-hands Slack channel, he laid down an ultimatum, underscoring the urgency: "AI's important. We need you to all learn it and at least onboard. If not, I'm hosting a meeting this Saturday with everyone who hasn't done it to understand their reasons." The Saturday meeting became a pivotal moment for several employees. Armstrong noted that while some had valid excuses for their lack of compliance, others faced termination for not adapting to the new requirements. He acknowledged that his approach might have been perceived as harsh, but he believed it clarified the necessity for integration into their workflows. As a result of this push, Armstrong reported that AI now accounts for 33% of the code written at Coinbase, with a goal of reaching 50% by the end of the current quarter. To ensure quality alongside this increased reliance on AI, Coinbase conducts monthly "AI Speed Runs," where select engineers share their experiences and training on utilizing these tools effectively. Armstrong stressed the importance of maintaining human oversight in the coding process, especially due to the financial implications tied to Coinbase's operations. As AI technology continues to permeate various industries, experts predict its potential to revolutionize business practices. A report by McKinsey & Company earlier this year suggested that AI could contribute an astonishing $4.4 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Furthermore, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has indicated that sectors embracing AI will be crucial in elevating the nation's economy to the third-largest position worldwide.
