Coinbase debuts AI agent that can trade and pay for premium research

In an era where AI-driven traffic is overtaking human activity online, financial and commerce firms are rapidly deploying tools that empower AI agents to act on behalf of users. Following Robinhood's recent introduction of trading agents, Coinbase has stepped into the spotlight with its own offering, enabling users to trade and purchase premium research seamlessly. Coinbase announced on Thursday that users can link this AI agent directly to their primary accounts to start trading. For those who prefer a more cautious approach, the option to operate the agent within a separate sandbox environment is also available. The AI agent can utilize advanced tools such as Coinbase Advanced, a platform designed for professional traders, which features TradingView charts for comprehensive trade analysis and execution. Users can instruct the agent to rebalance their portfolios, adhere to specific investment strategies, or even provide guidance on individual crypto trades. Currently, the agent is capable of trading within crypto spot markets and derivatives, with plans to extend support to equities and prediction markets in the near future. To enhance functionality, Coinbase is working on integrating customizable limits, such as setting maximum trade sizes, specifying which services the agent can access, and defining expenditure limits. This initiative leverages the open x402 payment protocol, developed in collaboration with AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near last year, allowing the agent to purchase premium research data APIs and on-demand computing resources for trading insights without needing user credentials or subscriptions. Coinbase has been actively investing in AI technologies for several years. The company previously launched AgentKit, which enables developers to incorporate automated wallets into their applications. Additionally, it introduced an AI-powered assistant in December to provide users with trading advice and financial tips. The newly launched agent can also integrate with platforms like ChatGPT or Claude via Coinbase's MCP server. Lincoln Murr, Head of AI Product at Coinbase, emphasized in a TechCrunch email that "Coinbase for Agents" is built on years of experience in developing the agentic economy, focusing on creating agents that can transact effectively. He added, "Unlike pure trading platforms, we uniquely combine exchange access with a native payments protocol, aiming to create a fundamentally different product for a future dominated by agent-based internet access." As the landscape for AI-driven payments evolves, major players like Visa are also exploring partnerships to enhance agentic payment capabilities. Recent developments have caught the attention of global financial regulators, with the Financial Stability Board (FSB) calling for robust safeguards to address the potential risks associated with AI technologies.
