Coinbase launches tool to let AI agents manage trading and payments

Coinbase has introduced an innovative tool that empowers AI agents to handle trading and transactions directly for users, marking a significant step towards making AI a central player in financial activities. This new feature, dubbed Coinbase for Agents, allows AI systems such as ChatGPT or Claude to carry out cryptocurrency trades based on natural language commands. With this tool, users can instruct their AI agents to rebalance their portfolios, scout for trading opportunities, implement strategies, and manage their investments over time. The feature is set to expand its functionalities to include stock trading and predictive analytics in the future. Furthermore, leveraging Coinbase's machine-to-machine payments protocol known as x402, these agents can autonomously pay for digital services like subscription-based research, data APIs, and on-demand computing resources without any human intervention. This capability suggests a future where agents could facilitate shopping experiences, finding the best deals and making purchases on behalf of users. Lincoln Murr, Coinbase's AI product lead, explained that the intention is to grant AI agents financial access, thereby enhancing their capabilities across the internet. He likened this shift to the transition that internet companies faced in the 2010s when moving from desktop to mobile environments, stating that AI agents are set to become the new economic drivers of the web. The launch comes during a burgeoning interest in AI, specifically in agentic systems, despite the crypto market experiencing a downturn. This dual focus on AI and the crypto space positions Coinbase uniquely, as they stand to gain from trading fees on agent-executed transactions and payment processing fees associated with USDC, the currency used in these agentic transactions. Since its launch in May 2025, the x402 protocol has facilitated over 100 million transactions. In the last month alone, approximately 157,000 agents have engaged as buyers through this protocol, showcasing a growing interest in autonomous payments. Murr emphasized the excitement surrounding the potential for agents to serve as primary financial actors on the internet, highlighting the immediate demand for autonomous payment solutions.
