Investors can 'buy' SpaceX early with Coinbase perpetual futures on pre-IPOs

Coinbase has introduced an innovative financial product that allows traders to gain exposure to private companies before they are publicly listed. This new offering, known as a perpetual futures contract or 'perp,' is initially linked to SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk. These pre-IPO perpetual contracts enable investors to speculate on the market valuation of SpaceX without needing to hold actual shares. However, it's important to note that this product is currently available only to traders located outside the United States. The launch comes in response to a growing interest from retail investors who seek opportunities to invest in prominent private firms prior to their entry into the public market—a privilege that has traditionally been dominated by venture capital and private equity firms. The timing of this release is particularly noteworthy, as it coincides with a recent downturn in cryptocurrency prices, with Bitcoin falling to its lowest value since early February. The introduction of the SpaceX pre-IPO perp is part of Coinbase's broader strategy to position itself as an 'Everything Exchange,' aiming to provide diverse trading options even when traditional crypto trading experiences a slowdown. Perpetual contracts are a favored method for trading in the crypto space, accounting for over 70% of trading volume on major global exchanges. Once SpaceX officially goes public, expected to happen shortly, the pre-IPO futures will transition into standard perpetual contracts. The competitive landscape for perpetual contracts is heating up, especially after the U.S. derivatives regulator recently approved the first regulated U.S.-listed perps. Coinbase has indicated that the SpaceX contract is just the beginning, with plans to roll out additional pre-IPO offerings across various sectors including AI and energy. Further comments from Coinbase on this initiative have yet to be released.
