In a recent episode of the "20 VC" podcast, Nick Frosst, cofounder of the Canadian AI startup Cohere, shared insights into the company's philosophy regarding its large language model (LLM). Unlike many competitors striving to create engaging conversational agents, Cohere is focused on delivering practical solutions for businesses. Frosst emphasized that their training process does not prioritize being an entertaining conversational partner. "We’re not training it to be an amazing conversationalist with you," he stated. Instead, the goal is to develop a model that serves enterprise needs, without the distractions of keeping users continuously engaged. Founded in 2019, Cohere has positioned itself among other foundational model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, with notable clients including Dell, SAP, and Salesforce. Frosst pointed out that their focus on enterprise applications stems from a belief that large language models are most beneficial in professional settings. He remarked, "If I look at my personal life, there’s not a ton that I want to automate. I actually don’t want to respond to text messages from my mom faster. I want to do it more often, but I want to be writing those." Cohere's training methodology also sets it apart, relying on synthetic data that simulates business environments. Frosst explained how they create fictitious companies and generate mock communications between employees, allowing the model to learn from these constructed scenarios. Recently valued at $6.8 billion following a funding round led by Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital, Cohere stands out in a market where other companies, such as Meta and Google, are heavily investing in making their chatbots more human-like. These competitors are developing chatbots that can proactively engage with users and maintain conversation histories to enhance user interaction. In contrast, Cohere remains committed to its enterprise-first strategy, focusing on delivering effective and specialized AI solutions rather than aiming for the charm of a human-like conversationalist. The company's unique approach continues to set it apart in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
