Cohere to acquire German AI company Aleph Alpha as it looks to expand in Europe

Cohere, a Canadian AI laboratory, announced its intention to acquire Aleph Alpha, a German AI firm, in a move aimed at significant growth within the European market. This strategic acquisition is supported by a substantial investment from the Schwarz Group, a prominent backer of Aleph Alpha, which plans to inject $600 million into Cohere's forthcoming Series E funding round. Expected to close in 2026, this deal remains contingent on fulfilling regulatory requirements, and specific financial details have yet to be revealed. Founded in 2019, Cohere has successfully raised $1.6 billion, attracting investments from major players like Nvidia and AMD, and earning a valuation of $7 billion by 2025. Aidan Gomez, co-founder and CEO of Cohere, highlighted the synergies between the two companies, stating, "The integration of Cohere and Aleph Alpha will accelerate our global reach and further our goal of delivering sovereign AI solutions to countries worldwide." Gomez emphasized the unique partnership, rooted in shared values of privacy and responsible innovation between Canada and Germany, positioning them as a trusted partner in the AI realm. The acquisition aims to enhance Cohere's capabilities in providing secure, tailored AI solutions for heavily regulated sectors such as finance, healthcare, and telecommunications. Cohere noted that Aleph Alpha's established relationships within the German public sector, including contracts with the ministry for digital affairs and the Baden-Württemberg regional government, were particularly appealing. The acquisition not only facilitates Cohere's entry into Europe's largest economy but also significantly accelerates its expansion efforts throughout the continent. Established in 2019, Aleph Alpha initially focused on developing large language models before shifting to AI applications, securing over $600 million in funding from investors and grants, as reported by Dealroom.
