Cohere, a prominent player in the enterprise AI space, announced on Wednesday that it has successfully raised an additional $100 million, elevating its valuation to a remarkable $7 billion. This funding is an extension of a previously announced round back in August, which had already garnered $500 million at a valuation of $6.8 billion. In a strategic move, Cohere has partnered with AMD, a company that is not only an investor but also a significant player in the GPU market. This collaboration allows Cohere's full suite of Command-family AI models—including those for vision, translation, and reasoning—to operate on AMD's Instinct GPU, positioning it as a competitor to Nvidia's offerings. Interestingly, AMD will also utilize Cohere's technology internally, marking a significant endorsement. Despite this new partnership, Cohere has clarified that it will continue to support Nvidia GPUs, ensuring that it does not limit its options to a single vendor. Founded in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, a key figure behind the influential 'Transformer' paper that sparked the generative AI revolution, Cohere has carved out its niche in the enterprise market. Although achieving a valuation of $7 billion in just six years is impressive, Cohere faces fierce competition from the likes of OpenAI, which was valued at an astonishing $500 billion last month, and Anthropic, which reached $183 billion earlier this month. Aiming to appeal to enterprises that prioritize AI sovereignty—maintaining control over their data and models—Cohere is positioning itself as a critical player in an increasingly competitive landscape. Recent investors in this funding round include the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and Nexxus Capital Management, known for their focus on Mexico and Iberia.
