Cohere hits a $6.8B valuation as investors AMD, Nvidia, and Salesforce double down

Cohere has made headlines after successfully raising an impressive $500 million in an oversubscribed funding round, elevating its valuation to a staggering $6.8 billion. This marks a substantial increase from the $5.5 billion it reported just over a year ago following its previous funding of the same amount. Founded in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, one of the pivotal authors behind the groundbreaking 'Attention is All You Need' research paper, Toronto-based Cohere has emerged as a significant player in the landscape of large language models (LLMs). Despite operating in a competitive environment dominated by industry giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, Cohere has carved out a niche by focusing on secure LLMs tailored specifically for enterprise applications rather than consumer use. The company has secured partnerships with prominent entities in the enterprise technology sector, including Oracle, Dell, Fujitsu, and SAP, as well as major organizations like RBC. Notably, the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan has joined as a new investor in this funding round. Cohere's recent press release emphasized its commitment to providing a security-first category of enterprise AI, addressing a market gap it believes is overlooked by models originally designed for consumers. In a move that highlights the ongoing talent wars in the AI sector, Cohere recently appointed Joelle Pineau, the former head of research at Meta, as its chief AI officer. Additionally, the company has welcomed Francois Chadwick as its new CFO, who previously held positions at KPMG and Uber. The latest funding round was led by Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital, with participation from existing investors like AMD Ventures, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures. However, it is worth noting that Oracle, which had previously invested in Cohere, was not listed as a participating investor this time, raising questions about its current involvement with the company amidst its closer alignment with OpenAI for a significant data center initiative known as Stargate.
