Cognizant says its employee laptop tracking tool isn’t for performance evaluation

Cognizant, the prominent global IT services provider, has sparked a notable debate about workplace surveillance with the rollout of its new workforce management tool, ProHance. This system is being implemented in specific project areas and aims to provide detailed tracking of employees' activities on company-issued laptops. Recently introduced to executives for training purposes, ProHance has raised essential questions about data privacy and collection practices in corporate settings. The ProHance tool is designed to deliver in-depth insights into daily operations, meticulously monitoring keyboard and mouse movements. Reports indicate that it captures the exact applications and web domains employees engage with during work hours. The software employs strict metrics to evaluate activity; for instance, employees are classified as 'idle' after just five minutes of inactivity, and 'away from system' if their laptops remain unused for more than fifteen minutes. Additionally, it offers minute-by-minute tracking of login times, active software engagement, and task duration, aiming to highlight workflow inefficiencies and areas for improvement. However, Cognizant has proactively addressed concerns regarding potential misuse of this tool for performance tracking. A spokesperson for the company firmly denied that ProHance is intended to monitor or evaluate individual employee contributions. The firm emphasized that using productivity measurement tools is a standard practice within the industry, often driven by client demands for accountability and efficiency. The spokesperson further clarified that ProHance is implemented solely within specific Business Process Management or Intuitive Operations & Automation projects at the request of clients, stressing that its purpose is to enhance understanding of client processes and identify time-related inefficiencies. Importantly, Cognizant assured that employees are informed and give consent before the tools are activated, and the data collected will not influence performance evaluations, underscoring their commitment to safeguarding employee privacy.
