In a dramatic turn of events, Cognition, the AI coding startup that recently acquired Windsurf, has laid off 30 employees and is now offering buyouts to approximately 200 remaining staff members. This latest development, reported by The Information, adds to the turbulence that Windsurf employees have endured in recent months. Windsurf's journey has been fraught with challenges, including an aborted acquisition by OpenAI and the loss of key leaders to Google in a significant $2.4 billion deal that focused more on talent acquisition than company purchase. Despite this chaos, Cognition initially expressed optimism about integrating Windsurf's team, promising financial compensation for all employees involved in the acquisition. However, the reality appears to be shifting as it becomes evident that Cognition's primary interest may have been Windsurf's intellectual assets rather than its workforce. According to an email obtained by The Information, employees have until August 10 to decide on the buyout, which offers them nine months' salary. For those opting to remain with the company, the conditions are stark: they must commit to a demanding schedule, spending six days in the office and working over 80 hours a week. This relentless pace has become a common expectation at leading AI firms. In a message from Cognition's CEO, Scott Wu, he stated, "We don’t believe in work-life balance—building the future of software engineering is a mission we all care so deeply about that we couldn’t possibly separate the two." TechCrunch has reached out for further comments from Cognition on the matter.
